Prince William may hold the royal position as the Duke of Cambridge but he is first and foremost a brother to Harry. After the recent announcement by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan, who wished to step back from their royal duties, Prince William has expressed his sadness at the current state of affairs. This comes right before the Queen summoned an emergency crisis summit to discuss the future of the Duke and Duchess.

As Harry is stepping away from his royal title, the two brothers will now be considered “separate entities.” The two of them have had to go through the harrowing experience of their mother, Princess Diana's, very publicly discussed death. Princess Diana who was subject to much public scrutiny was always a good mother to her sons. Her death was a severe blow to their childhood but was also something that forged their relationship, making it stronger. "This is a very special relationship forged by duty and loss – yet running through it is a shared sense of humor inherited from their mother," Richard Kay wrote for the Daily Mail. "Their uncanny ability to finish each other’s sentences, to know what the other is thinking before they have a chance to speak reveals a bond that many thoughts had ended with childhood."

The brothers leaned on each other growing up, to cope with the loss of their mother. "I’ve put my arm around my brother all our lives and I can’t do that anymore; we’re separate entities," William told a friend, according to The Guardian. "I’m sad about that. All we can do, and all I can do, is try and support them and hope that the time comes when we’re all singing from the same page. I want everyone to play on the same team."

Although they were close growing up, their relationship saw the first signs of strain when Harry introduced Meghan Markle, who was then his girlfriend, to his brother. In spite of this, William was the best man at Harry and Meghan's royal wedding. "Now they have their own families, they no longer rely on each other as before. They have become different people with different outlooks on life," a source told The Sun, as separate courts had to be made when Meghan was expecting her first child.

Harry even mentioned the distance growing in the relationship between the brothers in an ITV documentary from last year. "We are certainly on different paths at the moment, but I will always be there for him as I know he will always be there for me," he said. Meghan also spoke about how her British friends warned her about British tabloids would destroy her life and admitted in the interview that she was not really okay, having found it hard to adapt to royal life. The couple's decision to leave the royal family may have been a culmination of the toxicity Meghan had to put up with.

The crisis meeting that will be held by the Queen at her Sandringham estate in Norfolk and will be attended by the Queen herself, Prince of Wales, Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Sussex. "Next steps will be agreed at the meeting," a royal source told The Guardian, about the future of Harry and Meghan who would like to work towards becoming “financially independent” and move out of UK to settle in Canada or America. "There are a range of possibilities for the family to review, which take into account the thinking the Sussexes outlined earlier in the week," the source added.
